The design proposal focuses on addressing the affordable housing crisis in London, situated in a diverse urban area. It aims to create a compact-living residential typology that draws inspiration from London’s rich architectural history. By referencing key styles such as Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian, the design seeks to blend traditional elements with modern needs, creating a suitable solution for contemporary urban living.

Design Concept

The project increases housing density in established neighborhoods through multilevel living units. These units take cues from traditional terrace housing, integrating well into the existing city layout. The design emphasizes flexibility, allowing for different layouts that cater to singles, couples, and families. This adaptability means that as a resident’s needs change, their living space can change as well, offering a more functional approach to urban housing.

Material Utilization

Cross Laminated Timber is a primary material used in the design, selected for its strength and visual appeal. This material is light and allows for quick construction, which also minimizes waste. The design includes three interchangeable facades that reflect the historical influences, ensuring that new developments fit within various urban settings. This focus on material choice balances modern construction techniques with traditional aesthetics.

Community Engagement

The layout encourages community interaction, with a strong emphasis on shared spaces. Gardens and coworking areas are central to the design, promoting socializing among residents while ensuring private areas remain intact. These communal features enhance day-to-day living and foster connections among residents, creating an environment that supports a range of lifestyles.

Functional Infrastructure

The residential modules come equipped with essential services like plumbing, electricity, and gas. This careful planning helps residents customize their living spaces to fit their needs. By including infrastructure for individual preferences, the design allows for personalization, creating comfortable homes that reflect the occupants’ lives.

At its core, the design balances the historical narrative of London’s architecture with modern living requirements, resulting in a thoughtful addition to the urban landscape.
