PĀTAKA - Storage of Thoughts is a meditation cabin designed to promote reflection and well-being. The project is situated in a north-facing glade, harnessing natural light and the surrounding landscape to enhance the experience of introspection. It embodies principles of contemporary architecture while referencing traditional Māori building practices. The design emphasizes a strong connection with nature and integrates cultural storytelling elements into its spatial organization.

Design and Functionality

The PĀTAKA serves a dual function: as a space for individual meditation and as a communal gathering point. The structure is characterized by its unique hexagonal plan, which facilitates movement and interaction within the space. An altar is centrally located, reinforcing the meditative focus and supporting both solitary reflection and group activities. This multi-functionality is enhanced by a ramp for accessibility, ensuring inclusivity for all visitors.

Material Selection

The architectural materials chosen for PĀTAKA include cross-laminated timber (CLT), thermally modified timber, and an efficient glazing system. The use of locally sourced radiata pine promotes sustainability and reflects a commitment to integrate with the natural environment. The CLT offers structural stability while minimizing the need for additional vapor barriers. The glazing enhances natural light penetration and facilitates passive ventilation, contributing to an overall energy-efficient design.

Unique Approach to Design

What sets PĀTAKA apart from other architectural projects is its fusion of traditional and modern design concepts. The elevated structure minimizes ecological impact and maximizes light exposure, creating an engaging atmosphere for contemplation. Its roof geometry and varying façade elements help the structure harmonize with its surroundings while providing users with distinctly different views throughout the day. This attention to context and cultural relevance positions PĀTAKA as a notable example in the realm of contemplative architecture.

Seasonal Adaptation

The design also acknowledges seasonal changes. Large windows are oriented to capitalize on sunlight, adapting the internal climate throughout the year. This feature not only enhances the comfort of the users but also reinforces the connection between the building and the natural elements, furthering the immersive meditation experience.
