Cross-Laminated Timber Huts for Poetic Retreats in a Natural Landscape

Project in-detail

Constructed from cross-laminated timber, the artist retreat consists of multiple huts arranged to enhance privacy while providing sweeping views of the surrounding Latvian landscape, facilitating both solitude and community for poets.
5 key facts about this project
01
Constructed primarily from cross-laminated timber sourced from local spruce forests.
02
Each hut is uniquely rotated to maximize private views while promoting community interaction.
03
The varying building heights create a dynamic topography within the natural landscape.
04
A dedicated skyspace invites reflection and deeper connection with the cosmos.
05
The design supports year-round activities, adapting to both communal gatherings and individual solitude.

The Gathering of Stones Poet Huts project is situated in Latvia's agricultural pastures, with wide horizons that extend to the sea, river, and forest. Designed to serve as a retreat for poet Fellows, the project creates opportunities for both individual reflection and communal interaction through a set of seven distinct huts. The concept centers around the idea of gathering stones, representing the collection of thoughts and ideas in a creative environment.

Building Arrangement

The layout of the huts emphasizes a purposeful arrangement that encourages visual connections while supporting a sense of community. Each hut is rotated uniquely to provide private views, allowing poets to find solitude while remaining close to their neighbors. This design promotes individual privacy without sacrificing the potential for social engagement, an important aspect of the creative process.

Topographical Dynamics

Varied building heights enhance the topographical character of the site. The differences in elevation create a dynamic experience for occupants, allowing them to engage with the surrounding landscape. Climbing to a viewing tower reveals expansive vistas, while descending to gathering spaces offers framed views of the sky. These spatial variations stimulate contemplation and creativity, inviting residents to connect with nature.

Material and Construction

Cross-laminated timber from Latvian spruce forests is used in constructing the huts, aligning with sustainable practices. CLT is valued for its reduced construction waste and improved thermal performance, making it a practical choice. The prefabrication of these wooden components allows for quick assembly on-site, minimizing disruption to the environment and maintaining a link to the region's traditional building techniques.

Program and Use

The poet huts are designed to accommodate a range of activities throughout the year. In summer, the social gathering hut's large porch becomes a place for poetry readings and communal gatherings. During winter, the focus shifts to solitude and reflection. This duality supports personal exploration and shared experiences among poets. The inclusion of a skyspace further enhances the environment, encouraging residents to contemplate their surroundings and the cosmos above.

The relationship between the huts and the landscape is central to the design, creating a setting that respects local context while fostering creativity. Each element works together to provide the necessary atmosphere for inspiration and artistic expression.
