Cross-Laminated Timber Cabins Integrated into Natural Landscapes for Cyclist Rest Points

Project in-detail

Cross-laminated timber cabins seamlessly blend into their natural surroundings, providing essential resting points for cyclists along the Eurovelo 6 route.
5 key facts about this project
01
Cross-laminated timber panels form the main structure, enhancing strength while reducing weight.
02
Charred wooden shingles provide natural weather resistance and aesthetic appeal.
03
The bent A-frame design optimizes interior space and structural stability.
04
Integrated resting spots serve as communal areas promoting cyclist interaction.
05
Prefabricated construction methods minimize environmental impact and assembly time.
The Eurovelo 6 Rest Stops exemplify a focused architectural response to the needs of cyclists navigating the Eurovelo 6 route across Europe, which spans over 3,600 kilometers. Designed as resting and recuperation points, these structures serve a specific function: to provide shelter, comfort, and social interaction for cyclists. Each cabin is tailored to meet varying needs, from simple seating to overnight accommodations, enabling a range of functional uses.

The architectural design of these rest stops pivots on the form and structure of a bicycle. This concept drives the overall geometry and material selection of the cabins, emphasizing both lightweight construction and durability. By reflecting the essence of cycling through physical form and function, the project instills a sense of connection to the very activity it supports.

Unique Structuring and Customization
A standout feature of the Eurovelo 6 Rest Stops is the adaptability of the cabin configurations. Cyclists can experience different types of accommodations, including the EV6 Relax, Comfort, and Deluxe cabins. The EV6 Relax focuses on providing a space for cyclists to take breaks, equipped with seating and table setups. The EV6 Comfort offers additional amenities for sleeping, with foldable modules enhancing space utility. The EV6 Deluxe cabin furthers this concept by incorporating comprehensive facilities for longer stays. This modularity reflects a thoughtful design approach, allowing for site-specific customizations tailored to varying contexts along the Eurovelo 6 route.

Sustainable Material Use and Construction
The materials selected for the Eurovelo 6 Rest Stops emphasize sustainability, building longevity, and aesthetic appeal. Wood serves as a primary structural element, enhancing visual warmth while contributing to eco-friendly practices. Polycarbonate sheets are utilized for their ability to provide natural light without compromising insulation. Additional engineered wood products support structural integrity, while lightweight aluminum components integrate seamlessly into the design.

The foundation of the cabins is innovative, employing steel piles and friction principles instead of traditional concrete. This technique minimizes environmental disruption, a key consideration given the project’s location across diverse landscapes. Overall, the construction method aligns with modern sustainable practices, reinforcing the project's commitment to ecological responsibility.
