"The Old Man and the Sea" represents a thoughtful architectural response to the needs of patients in residential care. This project is designed to create an environment that fosters dignity and comfort for individuals at the final stages of life. By emphasizing natural materials and an integration with the surrounding landscape, the design promotes an uplifting atmosphere that encourages human connection and reflection.

The function of this project centers on providing peaceful living spaces that enhance the quality of life. Key components include a residential area, wellness facilities, communal interaction spaces, and serene contemplation areas. Each element is carefully configured to support various activities such as social engagement, personal reflection, and physical well-being.

Unique Design Approaches and Philosophical Underpinnings

A notable feature of "The Old Man and the Sea" is its integration of literary themes into the architectural design, drawing inspiration from Hemingway’s novella. This conceptual framework guides the spatial organization and material selection, imbuing the spaces with deeper meaning. The use of wood, glass, concrete, and natural stone reflects a commitment to creating a comforting and earthy ambiance while ensuring structural integrity.

The architectural layout promotes accessibility and comfort, with clear pathways and open communal areas. The library and chapel provide dedicated spaces for introspection, while the spa and swimming pool areas focus on holistic well-being. This emphasis on wellness is complemented by outdoor features, such as landscaped gardens and water elements that invite residents to engage with nature.

Architectural Innovations and Sustainability Measures

Sustainability is a core consideration throughout the project, evidenced by the use of local materials and techniques that minimize environmental impact. Large glass panels facilitate natural light, reducing reliance on artificial illumination, while the sloped roof serves both functional and aesthetic purposes. These design elements collectively promote energy efficiency and contribute to the overall therapeutic environment.

The project’s architectural plans and sections reveal a well-considered balance between private and communal spaces, significantly impacting the residents' experience. The strategic orientation of buildings ensures optimal views and natural ventilation, enhancing the overall livability.
