The VELOPOD is a mobile rest stop designed for cyclists along the EuroVelo 6 route, which extends through ten countries in Europe. The project aims to provide necessary services for cyclists while creating a space that encourages social interaction. Drawing inspiration from the form of a bicycle, the design merges practicality with an inviting atmosphere, adaptable to various regional contexts rich in local resources.

Design Concept

The VELOPOD offers a replicable design that can maintain its unique identity at different locations. The layout emphasizes both private and communal areas. Features include a sleeping space for two guests, a shower and water closet system linked to a grey water tank, and a counter for food preparation. With these elements, the design promotes a shared experience among cyclists, enhancing their journey.

Materials and Structure

Construction focuses on the use of recycled materials, highlighting a commitment to sustainability. Panels provide sturdy walls, while a structural steel plane reinforces the overall integrity of the design. Curved aluminum tubes add strength and create an appealing profile. These materials align with modern architectural practices that seek to minimize environmental impact while maximizing utility.

Functional Areas

A lightweight platform extends from the VELOPOD, allowing for outdoor activities and social gatherings. This platform mirrors the design of a velodrome, featuring sloped surfaces that support bicycle movement, making the area more functional for users. The installation also incorporates a PowerFilm photovoltaic roof, which collects solar energy to power lighting and other basic needs.

Anchoring Mechanism

The structure is anchored securely to steel footings for stability, yet it remains flexible enough to be relocated when necessary. This semi-permanent feature is a thoughtful aspect of the design, allowing it to respond to the varying contexts along the EuroVelo route. Inside, spaces are organized to facilitate resting and maintenance while promoting a sense of community.

The VELOPOD integrates practical design with user-friendly features, fostering interaction among travelers while serving essential functions. Its presence along the cycling route enhances the experience for cyclists, connecting them to both the landscape and each other.
