Circular Design Crafted from Sustainable Timber with Natural Ventilation Features

Project in-detail

With a circular form complemented by sustainable timber and natural ventilation systems, the design creates an immersive space dedicated to meditation and reflection in the Latvian landscape.
5 key facts about this project
01
Circular design enhances structural stability while promoting airflow.
02
Natural ventilation is achieved through strategically placed roof openings.
03
Sustainable materials include locally sourced cross-laminated timber and charred shingles.
04
Acoustic properties are optimized for a tranquil meditative environment.
05
Flexible interior layout accommodates various group and individual activities.
The GLIDE cabin project located in Ozolini, Latvia, is an architectural endeavor designed to serve as a meditation space that emphasizes integration with nature. The project is characterized by its circular wooden form, which not only provides structural stability but also fosters a sense of continuity and flow. This design reflects the intent to create a protective environment for individuals seeking tranquility and a connection with their natural surroundings.

The primary function of the GLIDE cabin is to offer a dedicated area for meditation and reflection, accommodating both individual and communal activities. Designed with flexibility in mind, the interior spaces can be adapted to suit various needs, promoting a sense of community while still allowing for personal contemplation. Key elements include a meditation room specifically optimized for acoustics and a versatile interior layout capable of supporting different uses.

Unique Design Approaches

One notable aspect of the GLIDE cabin is its commitment to sustainability, emphasizing the use of locally sourced wood materials. This choice not only supports local economies but also mitigates the environmental impact associated with transportation and resource consumption. The cabin utilizes structural wood for stability against wind and snow, while also incorporating sustainable wooden products which contribute to the overall aesthetics and functionality.

Another unique feature of the design is the dome-shaped roof that incorporates strategically placed holes for natural ventilation and light. This architectural choice enhances the cabin's atmosphere by allowing air circulation and daylight to penetrate the interior, creating a dynamic interplay between the indoor environment and the natural elements outside. The thoughtful arrangement of sound-absorbing wood panels further contributes to the meditative experience, facilitating an auditory connection to the surrounding environment.

Acoustic considerations deeply inform the design, ensuring that sound dynamics are optimized for promoting a calming atmosphere. By creating a synergetic relationship between the architectural form and sound quality, the project successfully delivers an immersive experience for users.

Exploring Architectural Plans and Sections

For those interested in delving deeper into the design of the GLIDE cabin, reviewing the architectural plans, sections, and detailed drawings will provide valuable insights into the project's structural and functional elements. The design offers a significant opportunity to explore contemporary approaches to sustainable architecture, adaptive spaces, and the integration of acoustic dynamics in building design. The unique aspects of the GLIDE cabin emphasize not only a commitment to environmental consciousness but also a thoughtful response to the needs of its users.

Design a new small-scale home concept in the 10th edition of MICROHOME — 100,000 € prize + construction

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility.

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design. The final registration deadline is September 25, 2025, and winners will be announced on Decebmer 9, 2025. For full competition details and submission guidelines, visit microhome.info.
