Charred Wooden Shingles Enveloping Geothermal Retreat with Pozzolanic Concrete Foundations

Project in-detail

Enveloped in charred wooden shingles and anchored by pozzolanic concrete, the design integrates geothermal elements to create a holistic wellness retreat that harmonizes with the Icelandic landscape.
5 key facts about this project
01
Charred wooden shingles provide enhanced weather resistance and aesthetic appeal.
02
The use of pozzolanic concrete reinforces sustainability while utilizing local geological materials.
03
Cross-laminated timber panels offer structural efficiency and reduce carbon footprint.
04
A bent A-frame design maximizes natural light and panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
05
Integrated geothermal systems provide energy-efficient heating for wellness facilities.
The Myvatn Serenity Spa is an architectural project located in the Myvatn region of Iceland, characterized by its thoughtful integration of wellness and leisure facilities within a cohesive design framework. This project encompasses the elements of spa services, a restaurant, and a brewery, creating a multifaceted destination for relaxation and social interaction. The architecture is carefully crafted to harmonize with the surrounding natural landscape, utilizing local building materials and sustainable practices.

The primary functional components of the Myvatn Serenity Spa include dedicated areas for wellness treatments, dining, and beer production. The layout consists of two primary volumes—the spa and the restaurant—connected yet distinct. This organization streamlines visitor movement and enhances the user experience by encouraging exploration of both the spa and dining facilities while maintaining privacy for spa patrons.

Design Innovation and Architectural Approaches

A unique aspect of the Myvatn Serenity Spa is its incorporation of a brewery alongside traditional spa and dining offerings. This integration not only provides a distinct experience for guests but also embeds local cultural practices into the architectural narrative. The brewery serves as a focal point, supporting community engagement and elevating the overall experience of the spa.

Architectural choices emphasize the relationship with the natural surroundings. Large glass panels facilitate natural light, fostering a connection to the external environment while providing unobstructed views of the picturesque landscape. The use of pozzolanic concrete within the structure further roots the spa within its geological context, reflecting the region's volcanic characteristics.

Sustainable Materials and Functionality Enhancements

The project employs materials that prioritize durability and eco-friendliness. Key materials include pozzolanic concrete for the main structure, steel for structural reinforcement and accents, and wood used in interior detailing. This combination promotes a modern aesthetic while ensuring resilience against the local climate.

The spatial configuration is strategically designed to guide visitors through various experiences. The ground floor encompasses both the restaurant and spa areas, promoting fluid movement between the two. The restaurant is elevated to take full advantage of scenic views, delivering a memorable dining experience. Lower-level spaces accommodate functional elements, including the brewery, ensuring operational efficiency and minimizing disruption to guest experiences.

For those interested in a deeper exploration of the Myvatn Serenity Spa, reviewing the architectural plans, sections, designs, and ideas will provide a comprehensive understanding of its innovative approach and thoughtful execution. The project exemplifies how architecture can effectively integrate diverse functionalities while respecting and enhancing the surrounding environment.
