Charred Wooden Shingles Enhancing Vertical Living In A Modular Urban Tower

Project in-detail

Utilizing charred wooden shingles and a modular design, the tower integrates sustainable materials to create a multifaceted living environment that promotes community interaction within an urban context.
5 key facts about this project
01
Charred wooden shingles enhance fire resistance while providing aesthetic texture.
02
Cross-laminated timber panels offer significant structural strength and sustainability.
03
The bent A-frame design optimizes interior space and promotes natural light.
04
Integrated green roofs support biodiversity and improve urban air quality.
05
Modular units allow for flexible living arrangements and efficient construction.
This architectural project presents a multifaceted tower designed to address the challenges of urban living in densely populated areas. The structure harmoniously integrates various residential and communal functions within a vertical framework, effectively utilizing limited land space. The combination of materials, forms, and sustainable practices aims to create a contemporary living environment that enhances occupant well-being while maintaining urban density.

Design Intent and Functionality
The tower's design incorporates modular elements that promote flexibility in living arrangements. Each module serves a specific purpose, which could include residential units, recreational spaces, and communal areas. This configuration not only optimizes space but also facilitates interaction among residents, fostering a sense of community within the urban fabric. The integration of terraces and green spaces within the architecture emphasizes the importance of nature in urban living, allowing occupants to engage with outdoor environments directly from their residences.

Unique Architectural Approaches
The project distinguishes itself through its innovative use of materials and construction techniques. The unitized approach allows for prefabrication, aimed at reducing construction time while enhancing building efficiency. Materials such as steel, concrete, and glass are employed strategically for both structural integrity and aesthetic appeal. The exposed steel beams and concrete frames present a modern industrial character, while the extensive use of glass promotes transparency, allowing daylight to penetrate deep into the living spaces.

Moreover, sustainability is a key component of this design. The potential incorporation of renewable energy sources, green roofs, and avenues for rainwater collection suggests a commitment to environmental responsibility. This not only reduces the building's carbon footprint but also aligns with contemporary architectural practices aimed at creating resilient urban environments.

Exploration of Design Deliberations
The architectural decisions made throughout the design process reflect a thorough understanding of urban dynamics. The vertical arrangement of functions suggests an innovative solution to traditional horizontal sprawl, optimizing land use while maintaining a compact form. The resulting composition offers a visually engaging silhouette that enhances the urban skyline.

For further insights into the intricacies of this project, the architectural plans, sections, and designs provide detailed examinations of the various components and their interrelationships within this innovative framework. Exploring these elements will deepen your understanding of the architectural strategies employed and their impact on modern urban living.

Design a new small-scale home concept in the 10th edition of MICROHOME — 100,000 € prize + construction

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility.

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design. The final registration deadline is September 25, 2025, and winners will be announced on Decebmer 9, 2025. For full competition details and submission guidelines, visit microhome.info.
