The architectural design project "Hungry for Wood" presents a timber pavilion located near the confluence of the Hoquiam River in Hoquiam, Washington. This pavilion serves as a multifunctional public space designed to promote community engagement and foster recreational activities. The design resonates with the area's historical legacy tied to the timber industry while addressing contemporary needs for social interaction and outdoor experiences.

The pavilion’s elevated structure and strategic orientation highlight its engagement with its surroundings. Designed using laminated timber, the pavilion reflects a commitment to sustainability and regional materiality. The integration of natural materials reinforces a connection between the built environment and the local landscape, making the structure approachable and inviting.

Unique Design Features
One of the distinctive features of the "Hungry for Wood" pavilion is its stepped form, which adapts to the natural topography of the site. This design approach encourages exploration and interaction as visitors navigate the exterior staircases that link various levels of the pavilion. The design prioritizes accessibility and encourages movement, offering a seamless flow from the hilltop to the riverbank.

Another innovative element is the inclusion of elevated viewing decks that provide panoramic views of the Hoquiam River and surrounding terrain. This emphasis on visual connection enhances the user experience and encourages public gathering within the space. The pavilion's design incorporates glass elements that facilitate natural light penetration while maintaining connections with the external environment.

Community and Landscape Integration
The pavilion's landscaping features open spaces that support community events, providing a flexible environment for performances and gatherings. This incorporation of green areas is critical for promoting biodiversity and maintaining ecological integrity within the site. Native vegetation surrounding the pavilion serves to enhance the aesthetic appeal while reinforcing the local ecological context.

The design combines various structural systems, such as the use of steel for railings and connections, which adds durability and safety without compromising the visual integrity of the wooden structure. Concrete foundations ensure stability, allowing for the expression of wood’s aesthetic qualities while meeting safety standards.
