The PortaHome project represents an innovative approach to contemporary living, focusing on modular, sustainable architecture. This design series comprises three prototypes tailored for diverse environmental settings: a tropical coastal area, a dense forest, and an arctic region. Each model is thoughtfully crafted to enhance functionality while promoting a connection to nature, showcasing the project’s emphasis on adaptability and resilience in modern housing.

Design Adaptability and Environmental Integration

A key aspect of the PortaHome series is its adaptability to different climates and environments. The tropical coastal prototype incorporates large openings and overhanging roofs to facilitate natural ventilation, minimizing reliance on mechanical cooling systems. Its use of durable materials, such as reinforced concrete and glass, allows for an unobstructed view of the waterfront while ensuring structural integrity against harsh weather conditions.

The forest model emphasizes the seamless integration of architecture with nature. It features ample glazing to blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces, fostering an environment where residents can engage actively with their surroundings. Utilizing sustainable wood treatments for thermal efficiency, the design promotes a warm, inviting atmosphere while supporting the environmental integrity of the forest landscape.

Design a new small-scale home concept in the 10th edition of MICROHOME — 100,000 € prize + construction

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility. 

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design.
