Charred Wooden Shingles and Large Windows Define a Harmonious Community Residence

Project in-detail

Charred wooden shingles envelop the structure, where extensive glazing enhances natural light and connects residents with the surrounding landscape in a thoughtfully designed community living space.
5 key facts about this project
01
Charred wooden shingles provide enhanced weather resistance and a unique aesthetic.
02
Cross-laminated timber panels create structural strength while minimizing environmental impact.
03
The bent A-frame design allows for optimal natural light and ventilation throughout the space.
04
Large glazing elements foster a seamless visual connection to the surrounding landscape.
05
Modular unit configurations offer flexibility in accommodating diverse resident needs.

This architectural project exemplifies a modern response to communal living, situated within a carefully considered natural landscape. The design integrates functionality with a seamless connection to the environment, achieving an effective balance between public and private spaces while maintaining aesthetic cohesion. Each component of the architecture harmonizes with the geography and enhances user experience.

Spatial Arrangement The layout comprises distinct zones—public areas designed for social interaction and private spaces emphasizing individual comfort. The ground floor hosts communal amenities, including reception areas and lounges, fostering interaction among occupants. In contrast, the upper levels feature private quarters, where large windows invite natural light and views, creating an engaging living environment.

Distinctive Materiality This project employs a thoughtful selection of materials that enhance its architectural integrity. Wooden cladding offers a warm, textural contrast to the robust concrete structure, while glass facades promote transparency and fluidity with the surrounding landscape. Steel framing provides structural support, ensuring durability and stability. Each material plays a role in reducing environmental impact and promoting sustainability without compromising design intent.

Innovative Design Approaches A unique aspect of this project is its modular approach, allowing for flexible space utilization. Interchangeable components enable adaptability in function, responding to varying needs. Additionally, the design emphasizes a visual connection to the outdoors through generous openings, blurring the lines between interior and exterior spaces. The incorporation of terraces on the roof facilitates outdoor activities, encouraging a lifestyle integrated with nature.

For those interested in exploring the architectural nuances of this project further, reviewing the architectural plans, sections, and other related elements will offer deeper insights into the rigor of its design and the philosophy that shaped its execution. This project stands as a representation of modern architecture’s potential to enhance communal living through thoughtful integration with the environment.

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
