Located above railway lines, making innovative use of underutilized urban infrastructure.
The architectural project "ON BOARD" addresses housing challenges in London by proposing a comprehensive solution for affordable, modular living above existing railway infrastructures. This initiative utilizes underutilized land efficiently and innovatively, tapping into the potential of urban spaces typically overlooked in housing developments. The design focuses on the integration of community-oriented living spaces that prioritize adaptability and sustainability.

One of the key functions of this project is to provide a responsive and dynamic living environment that meets diverse community needs, enhanced by the unique setting of using railway lines as a framework. The architectural design encompasses modular units that can be customized, allowing residents to modify their living spaces according to personal preferences and changing circumstances. This aspect promotes long-term residential satisfaction and community engagement.

Modular Construction and Flexible Spaces

The modular construction approach is a central facet of the "ON BOARD" project. The design features distinct modules categorized by function—essentials, connections, services, and leisure—that can be combined in various configurations to accommodate different household types. This flexibility allows for efficient use of space while fostering a sense of community among residents. Shared amenities, such as communal kitchens and social areas, are strategically placed to encourage interaction, enhancing social cohesion.

The project also emphasizes environmental sustainability by incorporating materials such as engineered wood, metal frameworks, and reclaimed elements. These choices not only contribute to the overall aesthetic but also promote durability and reduced environmental impact.

Adaptability and Infrastructure Utilization

The project’s adaptability is particularly noteworthy. The modular system is designed to evolve with the community, allowing for modifications over time that reflect changing needs. This aspect is crucial in urban planning, where static designs often fail to address the complexities of contemporary living. By repurposing existing railway infrastructure, the project efficiently addresses land scarcity without the need for new development.

The layout of the living spaces is another critical feature, integrating greenery and outdoor areas to enhance residents' quality of life. The combination of organic spaces with modular housing provides a balanced environment that caters to both privacy and communal living.

The "ON BOARD" project illustrates a strategic, nuanced approach to urban housing. By integrating community-focused design with the flexible use of modular construction and existing infrastructure, it provides a practical solution to affordable housing in a dense urban environment. Design a new small-scale home concept in the 10th edition of MICROHOME — 100,000 € prize + construction

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility.

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design. The final registration deadline is September 25, 2025, and winners will be announced on Decebmer 9, 2025. For full competition details and submission guidelines, visit microhome.info.
