The Birdhouse architectural project is a carefully designed space focused on mindfulness and engagement with the natural landscape. This structure serves as a retreat designed for reflection, interaction, and relaxation, situated within a setting that enhances its purpose. The project emphasizes sustainability and adaptability through its thoughtful integration of materials and architectural forms.

Innovative Design Features

A defining element of the Birdhouse is the Chimney, which functions as both a vertical aesthetic feature and a thermal management tool. This component facilitates natural ventilation, contributing to the internal climate control while also serving as an architectural focal point. The interplay between the Chimney and the structured spaces allows for efficient cooling and heating without reliance on mechanical systems.

The Lightwell is another significant feature of the Birdhouse. It promotes natural light circulation throughout the interior, creating a sense of openness and connection to the exterior environment. This design choice not only enhances the visual quality of the space but also encourages occupants to engage with the changing light conditions, promoting mindfulness and awareness of natural cycles.

Materials and Sustainability

The Birdhouse employs a selection of environmentally sustainable materials. Radial New Zealand Pine forms the primary structure and cladding, treated with Shou Sugi Ban to improve durability and aesthetic appeal. This traditional wood preservation technique allows for a reliable, low-maintenance exterior while providing a rich texture that contrasts with other design elements.

The roofing is constructed from corrugated metal, which is both resilient and economical, allowing for effective water runoff and weather protection. Clear PVC panels are incorporated into sliding sections of the design, facilitating transparency and providing expansive views of the surrounding landscape. The use of terrazzo for specific features, such as the flower altar, adds an element of artistry grounded in effective functionality.

The spatial organization within the Birdhouse showcases versatility, accommodating various forms of use. Design a new small-scale home concept in the 10th edition of MICROHOME — 100,000 € prize + construction

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility. 

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design.
