Charred Wooden Shingles and Cross-Laminated Timber Facade Enhance Nature-Connected Living Spaces

Project in-detail

Charred wooden shingles envelop the structure while cross-laminated timber panels create a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor environments, defining a versatile space for communal living.
5 key facts about this project
01
Charred wooden shingles provide both aesthetic appeal and enhanced durability.
02
The bent A-frame design maximizes structural integrity while allowing for expansive interior space.
03
Cross-laminated timber panels contribute to rapid construction and superior insulation.
04
Large operable glass facades facilitate seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor areas.
05
Natural materials harmonize with the surrounding landscape, promoting ecological sensitivity.
The architectural design project "Outside is a New Inside" presents a thoughtful integration of indoor and outdoor spaces. Situated in a rural setting that indicates a clear intention to connect inhabitants with nature, the project seeks to enhance both functionality and aesthetic appeal. The design prioritizes social interaction while embedding itself in the environment, allowing for an immersive experience that promotes communal living.

The overall function of the project revolves around creating a dwelling that minimizes the boundaries between interior and exterior. Spaces within the structure are designed for versatility, accommodating various activities for residents and guests. This approach not only optimizes the use of available space but also aligns with contemporary preferences for flexible living arrangements.

Unique Design Features and Approaches

A key differentiator in this project is its commitment to expandable architecture. By implementing large, operable glass facades, the design allows users to transition seamlessly from indoor to outdoor environments. This fluidity fosters an active engagement with the surrounding landscape, encouraging residents to utilize the exterior space as an extension of their living area.

The material selection further distinguishes this project from traditional designs. The predominant use of timber reflects a sustainable ethos, while the combination of wooden beams, glass, and concrete ensures structural integrity and aesthetic cohesion. Specifically, dimensions of wooden elements, such as 150x150mm and 30x30mm, are meticulously planned for functional and visual efficiency. The glass components serve not only to enhance natural illumination but also to frame picturesque views that transform the living experience.

Sustainability and Environmental Integration

Sustainability is integral to the architectural approach. The project incorporates passive design strategies, including the strategic orientation of windows and shading devices to optimize natural light and ventilation. The addition of thermal insulation materials further increases energy efficiency, making the dwelling both comfortable and environmentally responsible.

This project illustrates a modern interpretation of architecture as a means of connecting people with their surroundings. The design philosophy focuses on creating spaces that promote social interaction while remaining sensitive to their environmental context.
