Charred Wooden Shingles and Cross-Laminated Timber Create Community-Housing Solution

Project in-detail

Utilizing charred wooden shingles and cross-laminated timber, the design fosters a dynamic community environment that prioritizes adaptability and sustainability in urban housing.
5 key facts about this project
01
Utilizes a modular hexagonal design to enhance spatial flexibility.
02
Incorporates biophilic elements by integrating live plants into the communal areas.
03
Features a central staircase that serves as both a circulation path and social hub.
04
Employs passive solar design strategies to minimize energy consumption.
05
Utilizes charred wooden shingles for improved durability and aesthetic appeal.
The Empty Nest Project embodies a contemporary architectural approach focused on adaptability and integration with the surrounding environment. Situated in an urban landscape, this design presents a modular structure that prioritizes both individual privacy and communal interaction. The project aims to address the evolving needs of modern living while fostering a connection with nature.

The architectural design features a series of interlocking hexagonal volumes that create a dynamic facade. This arrangement not only facilitates natural light penetration but also offers varied spatial experiences within the building. The structure is characterized by a combination of wood, glass, and concrete, chosen for their durability, aesthetic quality, and sustainability. Wood elements provide warmth and a tactile connection to the natural world, while expansive glass surfaces enhance views and promote interaction with the outdoors. Concrete is primarily utilized for structural integrity, ensuring the stability of the modular system.

Modular Design and Adaptability
One of the primary distinguishing features of the Empty Nest Project is its modular organization. The design supports flexible living arrangements, allowing inhabitants to customize their spaces based on personal needs. The hexagonal units enable a fluid internal layout, promoting social interaction among residents while maintaining private areas for personal reflection. The central staircase acts as a physical and visual point of connection, reinforcing community engagement through accessible circulation.

The biophilic aspects of the project are also noteworthy. Strategic incorporation of landscaping elements, such as balcony gardens and communal green spaces, enhances both the aesthetic and environmental quality of the living environment. This not only improves air quality but also encourages biodiversity, contributing to a healthier urban ecosystem.

Sustainability and Material Choices
Sustainability is a core principle of the Empty Nest Project. The selected materials emphasize energy efficiency and minimal environmental impact. The use of wood reflects a commitment to renewable resources, while the design incorporates passive solar features to reduce reliance on mechanical heating and cooling. These sustainable design strategies provided a framework for a building that is not only mindful of energy consumption but also promotes a harmonious relationship with nature.

For those interested in exploring the project further, the presentation includes detailed architectural plans, sections, and design visuals that illustrate the considerations and strategies behind the Empty Nest Project. Reviewing these elements will offer deeper insights into this thoughtful architectural endeavor and its innovative approach to modern living.
