05
Incorporates geothermal energy solutions for sustainable facility operation.
The architectural project titled "Through the Peak" is located near the Gyrfjall's caves in northern Iceland. This design integrates seamlessly with the surrounding volcanic landscape, leveraging the unique geological features of the region. The project serves multiple functions, primarily focusing on providing visitors with a comprehensive experience of the natural environment while offering facilities for observation and engagement.

At the heart of the design is an emphasis on creating a fluid connection between the built form and the landscape. The architecture utilizes horizontal layering to enhance spatial dynamics, allowing for various points of interaction. The extensive use of transparent materials, particularly wire mesh and glass, provides visual continuity between indoor spaces and the breathtaking views of the Icelandic terrain. This design choice promotes an immersive experience in which visitors can appreciate the surrounding environment from different perspectives.

Unique Structural Design Elements

The architectural approach includes several distinctive elements that set this project apart. The use of semi-transparent wire mesh walls is a key feature. These walls enable an unobstructed view of the landscape while serving a structural purpose. In addition, the central viewing tower acts as a focal point, allowing visitors to ascend and gain a panoramic perspective of the peaks and valleys. This design prioritizes visitor engagement and exploration through motion, where the paths encourage a continuous flow of movement throughout the site.

Another notable feature is the wood path system, which connects various spaces while contouring along the landscape’s natural features. This approach minimizes ecological disruption and creates an environment that complements the rugged terrain. The careful arrangement of public interaction areas, such as the main viewing hall and cafe, ensures that visitors can enjoy the landscape while engaging socially within the space.

Sustainability and Material Usage

The project incorporates a range of sustainable practices, which are critical to its design philosophy. Reclaimed stone and wood are extensively used, reflecting a commitment to materials that blend with the environment. Reinforced concrete provides structural support, while solar panels harness renewable energy to power the facility. By integrating geothermal resources, the project demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to sustainability.

For a deeper understanding of "Through the Peak," visitors are encouraged to explore the architectural plans, sections, designs, and innovative ideas that illustrate the project's conceptual foundations and execution details. The integration of architecture with the natural landscape not only enhances the visitor experience but also embodies a thoughtful response to environmental considerations in design.

Design a new small-scale home concept in the 10th edition of MICROHOME — 100,000 € prize + construction

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility.

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design. The final registration deadline is September 25, 2025, and winners will be announced on Decebmer 9, 2025. For full competition details and submission guidelines, visit microhome.info.
