Charred Wood Shingles and Glass Facades in Modular Housing Solutions

Project in-detail

Utilizing charred wood shingles and large glass facades, the modular housing concept offers a customizable living experience that integrates sustainable materials with flexible design solutions.
5 key facts about this project
01
Utilizes charred wooden shingles for enhanced weather resistance and aesthetic appeal.
02
Incorporates cross-laminated timber panels to optimize structural integrity and eco-friendliness.
03
Features a unique bent A-frame design, promoting efficient space utilization.
04
Adapts modular units for flexible configuration based on occupant needs.
05
Integrates large glass facades to maximize natural light and connect indoor spaces with the environment.
The architectural project is a modular housing concept designed to address the evolving needs of modern living. It is characterized by a systematic approach focusing on adaptability, sustainability, and efficient use of materials. The design features a configuration of modular units that can be easily assembled, disassembled, and reconfigured based on the occupants' preferences or life changes. This innovative housing solution aims to provide not just shelter, but a versatile home environment.

The primary function of the project is to create customizable living spaces that promote user autonomy while maintaining structural integrity and performance efficiency. The design allows for easy integration of various architectural elements, making it suitable for diverse geographical contexts, whether urban or rural.

Innovative Design Approaches

One of the standout characteristics of this project is its focus on modularity, enabling a flexible spatial arrangement. Each unit functions independently while still contributing to an overarching community layout. This eliminates traditional constraints associated with fixed housing sizes and forms.

The integration of biophilic design principles is another distinctive feature. By prioritizing natural light and external views through expansive glass facades, the project enhances the connection between the indoor and outdoor environments. This creates healthier living conditions and contributes to occupant well-being.

Sustainable measures are embedded within the architectural planning, with materials such as concrete, steel, and thermal insulation being utilized for their durability and energy efficiency. Photovoltaic coatings are also integrated into the exterior, allowing homes to harness solar energy, thus contributing to the self-sufficiency of the modules.

Functional Components and Architectural Details

The design emphasizes ease of assembly and disassembly, allowing the housing units to adapt to different site conditions and meet a variety of user needs. The clear layout of architectural plans showcases dedicated spaces for communal areas, private rooms, and utility functions, balancing shared living with personal privacy.

Architectural sections illustrate the different levels and space usages within the modular units. The use of sustainable materials not only supports performance efficiency but also reflects contemporary design aesthetics through their minimalist presentation.

The overall architectural idea behind the project encourages a reconsideration of how homes are constructed and inhabited in relation to societal changes. The modular nature promotes a sense of community while providing the flexibility necessary for individual lifestyles.

For a more in-depth understanding of this architectural design concept, potential readers are encouraged to explore the detailed architectural plans and sections. Further investigation into the various architectural designs will provide valuable insights into the unique solutions this project offers in the realm of modern housing.

Design a new small-scale home concept in the 10th edition of MICROHOME — 100,000 € prize + construction

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility.

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design. The final registration deadline is September 25, 2025, and winners will be announced on Decebmer 9, 2025. For full competition details and submission guidelines, visit microhome.info.
