Charred Wood Facade and Expansive Views Define A Sustainable Dining Experience In Iceland

Project in-detail

Constructed with a charred wood facade and designed to maximize panoramic views, the restaurant seamlessly blends into the Icelandic landscape while providing an inviting space for dining.
5 key facts about this project
01
Constructed with charred wood, the facade enhances durability while integrating with the volcanic landscape.
02
The bent A-frame design optimizes natural light and views from every angle within the dining space.
03
Cross-laminated timber panels are utilized for both structural support and aesthetic appeal, promoting sustainability.
04
Extensive glazing connects the interior seamlessly with the surrounding environment, enhancing the dining experience.
05
Elevated on pilings, the structure minimizes land disturbance and preserves local flora beneath it.
The Greenhouse Restaurant in Mývatn, Iceland, is a modern architectural project that combines functionality with a deep respect for the surrounding landscape. Designed as a circular structure, the restaurant leverages its form to optimize both spatial efficiency and connectivity to the natural environment. Its predominant features include expansive window systems that frame views of iconic geological landscapes, including HVERFJALL volcano. This design allows natural light to permeate the interior while fostering a strong visual relationship with the outdoor setting.

Sustainability is a cornerstone of this architectural project. The restaurant integrates geothermal energy and solar panels into its operations, ensuring reduced environmental impact and energy efficiency. The use of sustainable materials further reflects a commitment to ecological responsibility. Charred wood siding contributes to the building's longevity and aesthetic appeal, while interior finishes of oak wood create warmth and comfort for diners.

Unique Design Approaches

The Greenhouse Restaurant stands apart from many similar establishments through its innovative use of circular architecture. This design choice facilitates a natural flow for patrons and creates inviting spaces that promote social interaction. Furthermore, the inclined roof of the structure not only enhances aesthetic appeal but also ensures effective water runoff and climate control—crucial factors in Iceland's variable weather conditions.

Incorporating extensive glass elements not only maximizes natural light but also actively engages the environment. Guests are offered a sensory experience that combines culinary delights with visual interactions with the landscape. The elevated design minimizes environmental impact, allowing for the preservation of local flora beneath the building’s footprint.

Spatial Organization and Functionality

The spatial layout of the Greenhouse Restaurant has been carefully planned to cater to varied functions. Key areas include the main dining space, kitchen, reception, and outdoor terraces that provide additional viewing experiences. This functional zoning supports both everyday operations and special events, allowing for flexible use of the space.

Natural ventilation strategies enhance the building's environmental performance, allowing for comfortable dining conditions even in extreme weather. The architectural design prioritizes the user experience while remaining sensitive to site conditions, ensuring that the restaurant serves not just as a place for dining but as a unique destination that fosters a connection with its surroundings.
