The project, “A Surrounding World,” is an architectural endeavor located on the island of Gluckau. This design seeks to create a multifunctional community space while emphasizing sustainability and social interaction. It combines residential living, communal facilities, and green spaces to enhance the quality of life for its inhabitants. The project represents a progressive approach to urban development that prioritizes environmental sensitivity and community engagement.

The fundamental function of the project is to serve as a hub for both residential and communal activities. By integrating housing with vital social amenities, it fosters a sense of belonging among residents. Key components of the project include residential units, a cultural center, kindergarten facilities, and extensive green spaces that support both recreation and agriculture.

The design employs a variety of materials that contribute to both aesthetics and functionality. Prominent materials include brick for durability and warmth, glass to maximize natural light, and steel which supports the structure of greenhouses. Green roof systems are implemented for ecological benefits, while photovoltaic panels are incorporated to enhance energy efficiency. The water harvesting system further complements the project’s sustainability efforts.

Unique design approaches distinguish this project from others. The incorporation of urban agriculture through dedicated greenhouse spaces not only promotes food production but also engages residents in ecological practices. Additionally, the configuration of mixed-use living options allows for a diverse range of residents, fostering intergenerational interaction and community cohesion. The deliberate positioning of communal areas encourages socialization, enhancing the overall sense of community connectedness.

The architectural plans provide detailed layouts that illustrate the relationships between residential units and shared spaces. Architectural sections reveal the interaction of light and space within the buildings, while the architectural design reflects a blend of modern and traditional aesthetics. This project exemplifies how architectural ideas can effectively meet the needs of a community while remaining environmentally considerate.
