Cave-Inspired Structure with Concrete Forms and Expansive Glass Facades in Volcanic Landscape

Project in-detail

Nestled within a volcanic landscape, the cave-inspired design employs concrete and expansive glass to create an immersive environment that connects visitors to nature while providing essential facilities for exploration and relaxation.
5 key facts about this project
01
Lava-based concrete is used to enhance durability and aesthetic coherence with the landscape.
02
The design features panoramic glass panels that offer unobstructed views of the surrounding geology.
03
The structure mimics naturally occurring landforms, allowing it to blend seamlessly into the volcanic terrain.
04
An innovative bent A-frame creates dynamic interior spaces while reducing material wastage.
05
Local materials are prioritized to minimize environmental impact and reflect the site's geological context.

ALFHOL is an architectural project located near Mývatn Lake in Iceland, designed to resonate with the geological context of its surroundings. The structure mimics the natural forms present in the local landscape, which includes volcanic features and the surface of the lake. The project embodies an immersive experience, allowing visitors to engage with the environment while providing functional spaces for various activities, including a gallery, café, and restroom facilities.

The primary design concept centers around the idea of integration with the landscape. The structure's cave-like form and triangular shape reflect the morphology of the surrounding hills, aiming to create a seamless transition between built and natural environments. The architecture is intended to invoke a sense of exploration, guiding visitors through a series of interconnected spaces that reveal different perspectives of the striking landscape.

Material selection plays a crucial role in the design. Concrete forms the primary structural element, deliberately chosen for its durability and ability to blend with the rocky terrain. Glass elements are incorporated throughout to maximize views and natural light, creating a transparent interface that connects the interior with the exterior. Additionally, steel is utilized for structural support, ensuring resilience against environmental challenges and enhancing the overall modern aesthetic.

The integration of these materials helps establish a unique architectural language that speaks to the site’s volcanic history while maintaining contemporary relevance. The design employs angular geometries and an earthy color palette, effectively mirroring the textures and tones found within the surrounding geology.

The layout of ALFHOL encourages movement and engagement. Entry points are designed to funnel visitors toward the interior, where they are met with open spaces that frame specific vistas of the lake and geological formations. Various sightlines lead to key points of interest, promoting an interactive experience as one moves through the structure. This strategic planning fosters a dialogue between the building and its setting, allowing for a deeper understanding of the natural forces at play.

ALFHOL exemplifies a thoughtful approach to architecture that prioritizes site specificity and functional design. By focusing on both aesthetic harmony and experiential quality, the project stands out within the landscape of contemporary architecture in Iceland. The emphasis on materiality, space utilization, and integration with the environment offers critical insights into current design methodologies.

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
