Black Wood Canopy Embracing Community Engagement in a Forested Setting

Project in-detail

The dark rectangular structure clad in black wood and framed by concrete supports creates an engaging focal point within the pine forest, serving as a visitor center that enhances community interaction and environmental education.
5 key facts about this project
01
The building's exterior features locally sourced black wood that enhances its integration into the forest.
02
Symmetrical column beams create a distinctive framework that gives visual coherence to the structure.
03
Large windows are strategically placed to frame views of the surrounding landscape, enhancing visitor experience.
04
A diorama inside highlights local flora and fauna, providing educational opportunities for visitors.
05
Sustainable features include solar panels and thick insulation to minimize environmental impact.

The Kemeri National Park Visitor Center is positioned at the entrance to the park and aims to connect visitors with the surrounding natural environment. The design features a rectangular shape that stands in contrast to the native pine trees. The overall concept highlights a strong visual identity, encouraging an appreciation for the beauty of the landscape.

Architecture Concept

A key feature of the visitor center is the symmetrical arrangement of supporting column beams. Within this structure, four boxes of varying sizes are incorporated, creating an engaging layout that attracts attention. The design deviates from traditional forms and presents a unique profile against the backdrop of the forest.

Materiality

The building’s exterior is clad in locally sourced, painted black wood. This choice not only serves as a visual element but also deepens the connection to the natural surroundings. The concrete supports are carefully molded to mimic wood grain, adding texture and warmth while maintaining a focus on the natural aesthetic.

Interior Experience

The interior is designed with spacious communal areas that allow for interaction among visitors. Large windows fill the space with natural light and provide stunning views of the forest. This connection fosters a sense of being part of the landscape. A diorama showcasing local plants and animals is also featured, offering educational insights and enriching the experience of those who visit.

Sustainability

Sustainable design is incorporated throughout the building. Features such as solar panels and a heat and air exchange system work to enhance energy efficiency. Thick insulation helps maintain comfortable temperatures year-round, aligning with modern environmental practices.

The visitor center is a careful balance of forms and functions, where the design embraces the landscape while providing a welcoming space for visitors to explore and learn about the surrounding environment.
