The Blue Clay Country SPA is located in the rural region of Kurzeme in Western Latvia. This wellness retreat is designed to connect with the surrounding natural environment, which includes grasslands, a serene pond, and wooded areas. The concept takes inspiration from the Jumis symbol in Latvian culture, representing two crossed grain stalks that signify fertility and prosperity. The building’s cruciform layout allows it to fit well within the landscape, creating a harmonious relationship between the structure and its surroundings.

Site Context

The SPA is positioned to enhance its engagement with nature. Visitors approach along winding paths framed by majestic oak trees. They encounter various outdoor areas, including a play space known as the Old Oaks court, a lounge that extends towards the pond, and landscaped gardens with outdoor fireplaces for gathering. The design encourages interaction with the environment while offering tranquil spots for relaxation.

Design and Layout

The layout includes different zones that balance privacy and social interaction. Each area is designed with seasonal variations in mind, allowing visitors to experience the site in diverse ways throughout the year. Treatment rooms offer views of the pond, promoting a calming atmosphere. This arrangement connects indoor spaces with outdoor experiences, aiming to provide a complete wellness experience for guests.

Materiality and Sustainability

Material choice focuses on local resources that emphasize sustainability. The structure uses zinc embossed sheeting for its roof and galvanized boarding for strength. Prefabricated wood trusses form the main framework, allowing for effective construction and durability. Laminated wood boards are applied in various interior and exterior finishes, contributing to a consistent aesthetic. The project also incorporates well-planned wastewater management systems to separate grey and black water and utilizes surface rainwater, demonstrating a commitment to ecological responsibility.

The design integrates various elements that enhance its function and aesthetic. Treatment areas are positioned to offer views of the pond, reinforcing the connection between wellness and nature. The combination of thoughtful layout and material choices creates a facility that embodies cultural identity and environmental sensitivity.
