Biodegradable Waste Solutions with Recycled Polyethylene for High-Altitude Sanitation

Project in-detail

Utilizing recycled polyethylene and a foldable design, this portable sanitation solution addresses hygiene needs in the extreme conditions of Mount Everest, promoting environmentally responsible waste management at high altitudes.
5 key facts about this project
01
Utilizes recycled polyethylene for a lightweight and durable structure.
02
Designed for foldability to enhance transport and assembly at high altitudes.
03
Incorporates biodegradable waste bags for environmentally responsible disposal.
04
Features a ventilation system to maintain hygiene and minimize odors.
05
Provides user privacy through lightweight screens integrated into the design.
The project focuses on a Portable Loo, designed specifically for use in the extreme environment of Mount Everest. This architectural solution addresses the critical need for sanitation facilities at high-altitude camps where climbers gather before their ascent. The design emphasizes functionality, environmental responsibility, and user convenience, positioning it as a necessary intervention in this unique geographical location.

The Portable Loo is constructed to withstand harsh weather conditions while providing an essential service for climbers and trekkers. It is designed to be easily transported, assembled, and maintained, ensuring that it meets the demands of the high-altitude environment. The incorporation of eco-friendly materials further reinforces its purpose, as it seeks to minimize the ecological footprint while promoting proper waste management practices in a fragile ecosystem.

Sustainable Design Approaches

This project stands out due to its commitment to sustainability and user-centered design. The choice of recycled polyethylene for the main structure is particularly notable, as it combines durability with lightweight properties, making it suitable for transport to challenging locations. The use of biodegradable waste bags ensures that waste can be managed responsibly, reducing environmental contamination.

The innovative ventilation system integrated into the design plays a crucial role in maintaining hygiene and comfort for users. This system mitigates odors and promotes airflow, making the unit more pleasant to use, even in confined spaces. Additionally, the attention to privacy through the use of lightweight screens reflects an understanding of climber needs, enhancing user experience in a limited-access environment.

Functional Specificity of the Design

The Portable Loo features a foldable structure, allowing for ease of transport and setup in various campsite configurations. With dimensions of 3' × 2' × 5', the unit is compact enough for high-altitude logistics while still providing adequate internal space for user comfort. Insulating foam is also utilized to protect against extreme cold, ensuring functionality regardless of the temperature.

By incorporating these design elements, the Portable Loo not only addresses sanitation needs but also serves as an educational tool, promoting awareness about waste disposal in remote areas. This focus on environmental responsibility aligns with broader initiatives to reduce the ecological impact of climbing activities on Mount Everest.

Design a new small-scale home concept in the 10th edition of MICROHOME — 100,000 € prize + construction

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility.

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design. The final registration deadline is September 25, 2025, and winners will be announced on Decebmer 9, 2025. For full competition details and submission guidelines, visit microhome.info.
