The Icelandic Tower Project is an architectural initiative situated at the intersection of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. It serves as a multifunctional observation tower that also acts as a cultural landmark, grounding visitors in the historical and geographical significance of the surrounding area. As a tribute to Viking navigation practices, the design aims to create an experience that connects users with both the past and the present.

The architectural form is derived from the concept of a "Sun Compass," incorporating significant elements of Norse heritage into its modern design. The structure features a central floating staircase that guides visitors upward to a prominent observation platform. This arrangement not only enhances the elevation experience but also facilitates immersion in the surrounding landscape.

Innovative Use of Materials and Sustainability

The project sets itself apart from similar initiatives through its innovative use of local materials and sustainable design principles. The exterior primarily comprises local basalt stone, which integrates the building into its geological context while also ensuring durability. Tempered glass curtain walls allow for ample natural light, enhancing the user experience, while maintaining structural soundness.

The incorporation of geothermal heating techniques ensures energy efficiency. Water sourced from local hot springs is utilized for heating and bathing purposes, reducing reliance on conventional energy sources. This dual-purpose strategy illustrates the project's commitment to sustainability while promoting engagement with the local environment.

Unique Structural Design and Functionality

The architectural detailing of the Icelandic Tower Project emphasizes both historical reference and modern engineering. The semi-circular Gateway structure serves as a threshold that signifies transition, allowing visitors to engage both with the architecture and the surrounding nature. This aspect not only speaks to local history but also facilitates social interactions among visitors.

Further enhancing the experience are strategically placed viewing terraces that provide unobstructed views of the landscape. These spaces are designed for contemplation and engagement with the environment, facilitating a deeper connection to the site's natural beauty. Additionally, civic areas embedded within the project create opportunities for communal gatherings, fostering a sense of community.

The design employs a combination of hollow steel sections and steel cables to support intricate designs without compromising safety. A comprehensive drainage system manages the landscape's biological and chemical components, reflecting the project's ecological mindfulness.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
