The project “Vegvisir” embodies a significant architectural endeavor that integrates cultural symbolism with practical design. Situated in a geographical context that honors Icelandic heritage, the project serves as both a landmark and a narrative exploration of navigation, utilizing design elements that resonate with local traditions. The structure is characterized by its monolithic form, reminiscent of ancient stone monoliths, which symbolizes stability and continuity within the landscape.

The main function of the project is to act as a guiding post, inviting exploration and reflection through its unique interplay of space and symbolism. This architectural design incorporates an interactive environment where visitors can engage with the surrounding landscape while contemplating the themes of navigation and orientation.

Materiality and Design Integration
The materials selected for “Vegvisir” include local basalt stone, glass, and metal, which establish a connection with the natural landscape and provide resilience against environmental conditions. The use of basalt acknowledges the region's geological characteristics, while glass elements enhance the interaction between interior and exterior spaces. Metal finishes contribute to the durability and structure of the installation.

In terms of unique design approaches, the project employs circular pathways and engraved symbols that reference Nordic mythology and cartography. This design decision fosters visitor engagement by encouraging movement around the installation, transforming the site into an interactive experience. The arrangement of space invites exploration and contemplation, reinforcing the themes embedded within the structure.

Symbolism in the Design
The integration of the Aurora Borealis as a backdrop enhances the experiential aspect of the site, framing the architecture within a natural phenomenon that resonates with the region's identity. The interplay of light and shadow throughout the day adds depth to the visitor experience, fostering a connection to the cosmos that deepens the understanding of the project's narrative.

The architectural idea behind “Vegvisir” emphasizes the relationship between history and contemporary existence, making it not only a structural form but also a cultural touchstone. The symbolic engravings and patterns draw visitors into a narrative that invites them to reflect on their own journeys while exploring the physical space.
