Bamboo Canopy Over Corten Steel Promenade in Wetland Reserve

Project in-detail

A folded bamboo canopy combined with corten steel columns provides an elevated walkway that enhances accessibility while allowing visitors to engage with the diverse ecology of the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve.
5 key facts about this project
01
The observation tower is supported by helical piers, minimizing ecological disruption.
02
Bamboo is used for the tower's folded canopy, enhancing camouflage within the landscape.
03
An accessible ramp wraps around the corten steel columns, ensuring universal access.
04
The boardwalk design allows for immersive experiences while safeguarding delicate marshes.
05
Shaded seating areas on the observation deck promote wildlife observation and reflection.

The Pinfold project is located in the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve and is designed to create a balance between human activity and the natural environment. The aim is to reduce the impact of visitors while enhancing their connection to the surrounding landscape. With an elevated boardwalk and an observation tower, the design facilitates exploration of the wetlands while minimizing disruption to the ecosystem.

Design Strategies

The boardwalk serves as the main pathway, guiding visitors through sensitive areas of marshes, vegetation, and dunes. By being elevated, it allows people to experience the beauty of the wetlands without harming delicate plants and animals below. As the pathway winds gently, it offers visitors different views, fostering an engaging interaction with the natural surroundings.

Structural Considerations

At the core of the design is the observation tower, which rests on helical piers that provide stability above the wetland. This foundation spreads the weight of the tower across three columns instead of one, which helps reduce its footprint on the fragile landscape. This method demonstrates careful planning, focusing on maintaining the health of the ecosystem while offering a secure structure for visitors.

Material Choices

The observation tower is covered in folded bamboo fabric, chosen for its sustainability and aesthetic qualities. Not only does the bamboo blend harmoniously with the environment, but it also serves to soften the tower's presence in the landscape. This choice of material supports the project's goal of being visually unobtrusive while remaining functional and durable.

Accessibility Features

A ramp wraps around corten steel columns, making it easier for everyone to access the observation deck. By doing this, the design ensures that all visitors can enjoy the views and experience nature without barriers. The shaded bench on the deck allows people to take a moment to rest while observing wildlife, creating a space for quiet reflection amidst the beauty of the wetlands.

The Pinfold exemplifies thoughtful architectural design that prioritizes the relationship between people and nature through its careful arrangement of pathways, structures, and materials. Each element works together to create an enriching experience for visitors, inviting them to appreciate the natural setting.

MICROHOME 10: Celebrating Small-Scale Living with €100,000 Prize Fund and Kingspan’s Innovation

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
