Adaptive Viewing Platform with Steel Supports and Flexible Mesh Over a Volcanic Landscape

Project in-detail

A flexible mesh platform supported by steel pillars allows visitors to engage deeply with the volcanic landscape of Haverfjall, offering a space for observation and reflection in the heart of Iceland’s unique natural environment.
5 key facts about this project
01
A flexible mesh surface allows users to adapt their seating position and engage with the landscape in varied ways.
02
The structure's design minimizes visual impact while maximizing panoramic views of the surrounding area.
03
Steel pillars provide both structural integrity and resistance to harsh weather conditions in the region.
04
Local materials were sourced to reduce transportation emissions and support the regional economy.
05
The platform promotes solitude and reflection, enhancing the visitor experience in a natural setting.
Hammock Outlook is an architectural design project strategically situated in Haverfjall, a prominent volcanic area overlooking Lake Mývatn in Iceland. This project serves as a viewing platform, emphasizing the relationship between the structure and its natural surroundings. Hammock Outlook not only provides a space for observation but also encourages user engagement with the landscape, transforming a typical viewpoint into an immersive experience.

The design integrates a structure supported by four steel pillars, showcasing the intersection between engineering and aesthetics. These pillars are designed to minimize visual intrusion while offering resilience against harsh climatic conditions. The platform features a flexible mesh surface, allowing adaptive user interaction. This element stands in contrast to conventional viewing platforms, which often lack the capacity for users to select their level of engagement, whether lying down, sitting, or standing. This design serves as a meditation space that fosters reflective moments in a beautiful natural setting.

Innovative Material Utilization

One standout aspect of Hammock Outlook is its utilization of materials that are both functional and environmentally responsible. The project employs steel for the support pillars, ensuring structural integrity and durability, while addressing weather challenges in the region. The flexible mesh used for the platform fosters a lightweight and adaptable characteristic, allowing for portability without compromising on stability. The incorporation of cables and cube beams further enhances the overall design, creating an interplay between strength and lightness.

The careful selection and combination of these materials reflect a broader commitment to sustainability and minimal environmental impact. By sourcing locally, the project reduces transport emissions and supports regional economies while ensuring harmony with the landscape.

User-Centric Engagement

In terms of user experience, Hammock Outlook is designed to encourage exploration and connection with the environment. The platform allows a variety of interactions; users can choose how they engage with the space, maximizing their experience of the surrounding scenery. This flexibility addresses diverse visitor preferences, inviting solitude while also accommodating communal gatherings. The structural design promotes a sense of immersion, allowing users to feel unified with the volcanic landscape.

In summary, Hammock Outlook epitomizes a thoughtful architectural response to its unique setting through innovative material use and user-focused design.
