Acoustic Mirrors and Compressed Earth Columns Define a Multi-Sensory Observation Tower in the Desert Landscape

Project in-detail

Constructed with acoustic mirrors and compressed earth blocks, this observation tower invites users to engage with the desert landscape through a multi-sensory experience designed for heightened awareness and exploration.
5 key facts about this project
01
Constructed using compressed earth blocks for structural stability and sustainability.
02
Incorporates acoustic mirrors to enhance auditory experiences of the desert environment.
03
Features modular platforms that allow for flexible user engagement and exploration.
04
Designed to blend harmoniously with the surrounding arid landscape and minimize ecological impact.
05
Utilizes analog sensory tools to provide a multi-dimensional understanding of observation.
The project "Rethinking Observation" presents an architectural design focused on enhancing the sensory experience of observation within a desert landscape. This architecture combines traditional visual engagement with auditory stimulation, creating an interactive environment that deepens the connection between visitors and their surroundings. The structure rises approximately 12 meters and covers around 396 square meters, enabling multiple platforms for user interaction and exploration.

Observation as a Central Theme

The primary function of this project is to provide a space for observation that extends beyond mere visual appreciation. The architect conceptualizes observation as a multi-sensory activity, integrating auditory experiences through the use of acoustic tools and magnifying devices. This approach redefines how individuals perceive their environment, emphasizing the importance of sound in relation to sight. Each observation platform is equipped with various tools designed to amplify these senses, thus promoting a richer engagement with nature.

Sustainable Materials and Modular Design

The structural components of the project utilize compressed earth blocks for columns, underscoring a commitment to sustainability and environmental integration. These materials reduce ecological impact while providing robust support for the architecture. Modular design principles guide the overall structure, enabling easy adjustments and replacements of individual elements. The incorporation of standardized wooden components and steel legs for platform support further enhances the durability and functionality of the project.

What Sets This Project Apart

What distinguishes “Rethinking Observation” from other observation towers is its holistic approach to sensory engagement. Rather than focusing solely on visual vistas, this architecture encourages users to consider the soundscape of their environment. Tools such as acoustic mirrors are strategically integrated to collect and amplify ambient sounds, creating a dynamic interplay between sight and sound. This interactive layer fosters a deeper awareness of the natural surroundings, facilitating mindfulness in observation.

The thoughtful design also takes into account circulation and accessibility, ensuring that visitors can easily navigate the various platforms. The clear organization of pathways allows for a streamlined user experience while adhering to safety standards.

Overall, the project exemplifies innovative architectural ideas that challenge standard observation frameworks by emphasizing multi-sensory interaction. Design a new small-scale home concept in the 10th edition of MICROHOME — 100,000 € prize + construction

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility.

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design. The final registration deadline is September 25, 2025, and winners will be announced on Decebmer 9, 2025. For full competition details and submission guidelines, visit microhome.info.
