Buildner is pleased to announce the results of its first annual Memorial for Witches International Competition, in which participants designed a theoretical memorial structure commemorating any social injustice, from the past or currently ongoing.

First prize winners Xiaodan Zhou and Chuhong Yin from the United States designed ‘The Weightless Being’ memorial space. It featured two dueling appearances representing propaganda versus reality in China’s recent handling of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Set within an abandoned hospital or shelter, the jury felt this project was “A powerful and original design that would engage the viewer through its multiple viewpoints. The concept works well with the tension in the project narrative.”

Second prize winner Maria Tîlvescu-Nicula from Romania stuck closer to the original concept by designing the ‘Memorial for Witches: Barefoot Under the Weight of Injustice’ which consists of a wooden skeletal structure three inverted triangular volumes clad with blackened timber.

Our third prize and student award winner was Annasya Koesty Fadhillah, Muhammad Rafli and Gina Khairunnisa from the University of Indonesia, whose ‘Dialogue’ design draws on both the ongoing pandemic as well as the symbolic representation of the ‘scale of justice’.
