Timber Cantilevered Structure Elevates Observation Over Wetland Ecosystem

Project in-detail

Elevated above a delicate wetland ecosystem, the timber cantilevered observation structure utilizes bamboo and steel to blend seamlessly with its surroundings while providing visitors with immersive views of wildlife.
5 key facts about this project
01
Elevated structure uses a micro-piling foundation to minimize ecological impact on the wetland.
02
Timber cantilever design allows for unobstructed views while reducing visual weight.
03
Bamboo balustrades promote natural aesthetics and sustainability.
04
Rooftop gardens incorporate native species to enhance local biodiversity.
05
Accessible observation levels ensure inclusive engagement with the natural environment.

The Flamingo Observation Tower in the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve, Abu Dhabi, exemplifies a thoughtful approach to architecture that intersects with ecological preservation. This architectural project serves the dual purpose of providing observation points for visitors while ensuring minimal impact on the surrounding environment. Its design is centered around enhancing the user’s interaction with the unique ecosystem of the wetlands, particularly the flamingo population.

The project structure consists of three cantilevered observation platforms elevated above water and supported by an arrangement of vertical timber poles. This configuration allows for panoramic views of the wetland while maintaining a visual lightness that integrates with the landscape. The materials selected for construction include steel beams for structural support, wooden decking for natural aesthetics, and bamboo for balustrades, ensuring that the materials resonate with their environment.

Innovative design approaches distinguish this project from traditional observation towers. The inspiration for the design is drawn from two key principles: lightness and mimesis. Lightness is emphasized by a delicate structural form that allows it to float above the water, creating little disruption while providing expansive views. Mimesis is achieved through the architectural form that echoes natural elements present in the environment, fostering a sense of harmony with the landscape.

Accessibility is also a crucial aspect of the design. The observation levels are equipped with a ramp system that ensures all visitors, regardless of physical ability, can engage with the natural setting. This inclusive approach, coupled with surrounding boardwalks constructed of locally-sourced materials, enhances the visitor experience while ensuring environmental integrity.

Sustainability has been embedded throughout the architecture of the tower. It incorporates renewable energy solutions, utilizing photovoltaic panels to support its energy requirements. The design also integrates native vegetation in the rooftop gardens, promoting biodiversity and providing habitats for local wildlife.

The Flamingo Observation Tower stands as a model of how architectural design can foster an appreciation for nature while providing functional visitor access. The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
